Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York spoke with reporters Thursday following the shooting death of Charlie Kirk at a Utah college event Wednesday. When asked about President Donald Trump’s abhorrent comments and other Republicans blaming the left, Ocasio-Cortez did not mince words.
"There is no understanding, as we know publicly, of who this individual is, what their motivations were, where they came from,” she said. “Whether it's a member of Congress, whether it is the president of the United States—to assume and assert and cast blame when the FBI has failed to even apprehend the assailant is absolutely an irresponsible action.”
But Ocasio-Cortez didn’t stop there.
“People can finger point all they want. Look at the record. Look at the actions of what we are doing,” she added. “I don't think a single person who has dedicated their entire career to preventing gun safety legislation from getting passed in this House has any right to blame anybody else but themselves for what is happening.”
With calls for “war” from the right and the demonization of Democrats by right-wing media, Ocasio-Cortez’s clear-headed response stands out as a moment of reason.
In the face of increasingly inflammatory rhetoric and actions, her restraint is a reminder of what true leadership can—and should—look like.
